California Legislature Rejects Single Payer Bill
New York Legislators should consider doing the same
California state legislators made the right decision this evening in rejecting a Single Payer bill, known as “CalCare.” Lawmakers in California recognize that Single Payer would destabilize the health care system while imposing skyrocketing tax hikes.
A Single Payer system in California has been estimated to cost between $300 and $400 billion every year. Similarly, analysis conducted on the “New York Health Act” has revealed it would lead to more than $250 billion in new taxes every year. Like California, New Yorkers are already paying some of the highest taxes in the country and cannot afford an increase of that magnitude.
Instead of pushing a costly, untested government-run system, lawmakers should look at commonsense ways to improve upon the existing health care system. It’s time to move on.
